Concert Review: Vans Warped Tour 2010 – Montreal
0Hey what’s up everyone. This past summer I had the chance of a lifetime! I was chosen by MuchMusic to be their correspondent at the Montreal Warped tour stop. I interviewed some bands and reviewed the bands I saw.
Remember to check out Rock The Walls:
Tuesdays 7-10 pm EST on http://trainrekradio.com

ENJOY!
My Warped Tour journey started in Toronto catching some of the bands that would play montreal on Saturday. I would leave my house at 10pm on Friday Night to gain some ground until I got tired. I stopped in Cornwall around 4am and grabbed a pillow from the trunk and put my seat back to sleep for a few hours. Once I had stopped I had a hard time falling asleep. It was like it was my first warped tour all over again.
I had covered and interviewed bands at warped tour, but nothing on a scale of this importance! Having already interviewed Set Your Goals [they won the 2009 album of the year on my radioshow Rock The Walls and we had a hour special on them!], Bring Me The Horizon, and Every Time I Die I was feeling pretty comfortable. I was also so stoked to interview the guys in Parkway Drive. In my mind, they just released what will be one of the Metalcore albums of 2010. Go pick it up, it’s called Deep Blue! The entire day lived up to and exceeded expectations for this guy.
After waking up in Cornwall and eating some breakfast, it was off to Montre-al! We got into Montreal and i must say, you freakin’ frenchman have confusing signs. Just sayin’. Guess I should have taken more french classes in high school. Oh well.
Getting a extra ticket/pass into Warped Tour, it was another unique experience for me. Making the trip with me was my Dad. While it is generally considered “pretty lame!” to bring your parents alot with you, I thought this was something that would be rad for a father-son experience I would never forget. As my number one support in everything I do and it’s no different when it comes to my radioshow and interviewing bands. It wasn’t like he was going into it TOO blindly…he decided to check out one of the stops on Gig Life 2009 Tour that featured Four Year Strong and Set Your Goals last year. Needless to say, he had a idea of what to expect musically from each of the bands. I could have invited anyone of my friends but instead brought him. Don’t know if there are any dads out there that would be up to do that with their 20 year son. You are the best Dad!
Arriving in MTL at around 10 am, and having never been to Parc Jean Drapeau before, I had no idea it was in the middle of where the Formula 1 track was. Pretty cool to see!
One thing that I always dread/am excited for at Warped Tour is getting Inside and seeing the schedule. With so many great bands playing this year, I was expecting at least 3-4 conflicts between bands I wanted to catch. Thankfully, only two really came up. Every Time I Die started 20minutes before their buddies in Four Year Strong [check those guys out if you have not. They are on the cusp of exploding. New record is called Enemy Of The World! and Post-Hardcore band Enter Shikari with Motion City Soundtrack.
Upon figuring out my schedule, I decided to walk around with my dad to figure out where all the stages were. Cristopher Drew a.k.a NevershoutNever! Was playing on the Alternative Press Stage. As you would expect, all the 13-15year old girls were there in full force and losing their minds! Having heard a few songs off his record released in January, the expectations for his live performance were pretty low. Someone once said “He’s the poor man’s Justin Bieber”. Can’t say I disagree. I decided to watch for a song or two and I will be honest. The music came across alot better live in my opinion.
11:40 AM - The Snips
Straight from the Rose City of Welland, Ontario locals to my college town were on for the Toronto and Montreal Warped Tour dates. They played mostly songs off their Blackouts E.P including my personal favourite and the title track; Blackouts. If these dudes are in your neck of the woods, go catch them! Lead Singer Ricky Pridmore has a rad ‘stache too. Ricky, don’t shave that off dude.
11:55 PM – The Dillinger Escape Plan
Having been into D.E.P since the 10th grade of high school, I was excited to catch some of their set. On the back of the Warped Tour Stage Monitors it says “$100 dollar fine for any bands that jump off or climb on Monitors”. If they actually applied this to the dudes in Dillinger, those guys probably don’t have any money left for beer at this point in the tour. Vocalist Greg Puciato was the craziest of the bunch, climbing 25-30feet above ground on to the top of the amps at the left side of the stage near the end of their set. As it ended, they completely trashed their set up rockstar style. Badass!

What’s up everyone. My name is Patrick Walford. I am the Host and Producer of a radio show called Rock The Walls This is my first post here on Room-Noise. You can check out my radioshow Rock The Walls Wednesdays at Midnight EST for my hour edition of the show http://broadcasting.niagaracollege.ca , or Tuesdays from 7-10 PM EST for my three hour long, feature show on http://trainrekradio.com . I will also be launching my own website for my show in about a few weeks time.
For those unaware of what “Rock The Walls is…”Is that I play a mix of Punk/Ska/Hardcore/Metalcore. I also have segments like Inside The Music where artists explain the meanings behind some of their songs, Rock The Walls Independent Spotlight where I take a unsigned band and feature them on the show, along with your music news, concert calendar, interviews, etc.
First of all, a special thank you to Connie for choosing me to write some stuff for the site. I’m excited to bring you guys some new music and tons of other stuff.
“This” all started just over 3 years ago. It seems like alot longer to me, but I went to go and see my first ever concert when I was 17. Motion City Soundtrack. After seeing that show I just became hooked to the band, and discovering new ones.
I was an (or so I thought) aspring Journalist. I decided I would like to Interview my favourite band for my high school website. Motion City Soundtrack. I sent a email out and did not expect a response. Much to my surprise, Epitaph contacted me back, and everything was set up. It will have been 3 years this November that I interviewed Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack. I never would have believed three years ago that I have interviewed nearly 100 bands, had my own radioshow or anything. I feel like that kid on almost famous.
Someone told me a year and a half ago that “Rock The Walls was and would always be just a stupid college radio show”. Looking back, I can’t believe how much that motivated me to say “fuck you” and kick-ass.
A year later I’ve had numerous huge bands on the show such as New Found Glory, Sum 41, A Day To Remember, Anberlin, Tom Delonge of Blink-182, and had both Cancer Bats and Comeback Kid exclusively premiere songs on my show.
With the first post you will see I was also incredibly lucky to Interview some bands for MUCH MUSIC this Summer at Warped Tour in Montreal.
None of this is from “sick connections” or “knowing someone”. It’s going out there and doing the work that needs to be done to make it happen. I am just like everyone else out there. A kid who loves music. All different kinds. Getting to personally talk to a vareity bands about their music, where they come from, etc. is an incredible honor. It is something I take very personally and expect myself to always do the best I can do. I see far too many people do this sort of stuff and just don’t give a shit. Put everything you have into a passion of yours you love more then anything. Getting to rock out in the radio booth, bringing people exclusive news and interviews they can’t hear anywhere else is . IThis is the kind of stuff I love about doing my radioshow.
I also stress… whatever your passion is….painting, becoming a doctor, etc. DO IT! Don’t let anyone ever tell you what you are doing is stupid. You will never know until you try something. Screw percentages, Screw anyone telling you you can’t do something because they think so. If you work hard, have a vision, and drive anything can happen.
I sit at my computer typing this baffled at what I have done so far, and excited for what is to come.
Join me next blog for some video/audio interview ACTION!
Take care,
Patrick Walford

JULY 2009: EdgeFest Review
0So I went to this year’s EdgeFest at Downsview Park in Toronto! The line -up this year was amazing so I couldn’t miss it. I went mainly for Metric but it was all worth it. Sadly it was raining that day and it was a bit cold, two summers ago I went to Vans Warped Tour and there was dirt EVERYWHERE. At EdgeFest…there was MUD everywhere. By the end of the night my shoes and pants were covered with mud.
I was pretty close to the main stage, so I got some decent pictures for you guys. So enjoy the remixes.

BLINK-182 SUMMER TOUR 2009:

July 24th – October
Tickets $20-$60
Openers: Fall Out Boy & Weezer
For their first tour since 2005, Blink 182 are trying a new strategy: rehearsing. “We used to walk onstage and forget our parts – we just wanted to play fast and look cool,” says bassist Mark Hoppus. “This time, we want to be more artistic.” The trio’s reunion tour will feature all their pop-punk hits and a few new songs, plus they’re planning an intense light show from Daft Punk and Kanye West’s set designer. “We want to use the entire arena as a lighting rig and a stage,” say Hoppus. “We’re being as ambitious as possible.”
They better come to Toronto, I will buy those tickets ASAP.
