Toronto Ascended With Trance At Toika Lounge
0Toika Lounge is usually known for bringing in ASOT trancers and the freshest progressive house talent to Toronto, but what about the local talents?
In late April, Impact Productions threw their first party at Toika Lounge, called “Ascension”. The line up featured Henry Yoong (Kid Zero), Saad Ayub and Gary Sagoo (Flux Muzik). Each one of them spun a very different vibe. The night began with Kid Zero spinning a very progressive set warming up the crowd. Saad Ayub played a lot of his mash-ups reaching 140BPM of mayhem and lastly Flux ended the night with a nice selection of tunes.
A video of the event was captured by GrooveENERGY, can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/52gEAzhVUJk
The venue filled up quickly; everyone was excited to see these locals hard at work spinning some exciting trance sets. The vibe was friendly; many familiar faces were seen in attendance inside Toika Lounge. Another element that made the event was the ASOT650 bake sale that helped raise funds to make ASOT 650 happen in Toronto. The team brought out all sorts of baked goods and had set up a station at an open area inside the club, something that you don’t always see. The bake sale was successful and added to the overall vibe of Ascension. A very awesome night full of great vibes and a good selection of tunes throughout were played. Great job to Impact Productions, Toronto can’t wait for more!
Impact will be bringing Ascension Vol. 2 so stay tuned for more information. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for more updates.

BRRRRR! – Winter Music Festival Toronto Review
0For Ride The Tempo
Written by: Ani Hajderaj | Photos by: Constance Chan
Festival season occurs typically in the summer where music fans can dance in comfortable clothing in the warm weather, however in Canada the party never stops. Montreal has been graced with their successful winter festival, Igloofest every year, but 2013 was time for Toronto to add to the winter festival line up. Brrrrr!
Organized by Live Nation, Electronic Nation, Destiny Events, Embrace and Balance Inc., Brrrrr! set out to give Toronto a taste of festival season a little earlier into the year with added layers and warm drinks.
Getting into the event was easy; there was no hassle getting your passes and tickets for entry. As you arrive to Echo Beach you see the stage and lights stand out in the skyline of Toronto as the music plays from the distance.
The security on festival grounds was confusing because they did not allow sealed water bottles inside the venue. However it was stated on the official Brrrrr! website that you could in fact bring in sealed water bottles.
The VIP areas included patio heaters and also private bars where patrons got their drinks from. There was a heated dome area with Corona beer kiosks that served beer. On the outskirts of the area bars offered drinks along with a cup of hot cider as chaser which was neat and added to the winter vibe of the festival. As the winter staple beverage, hot chocolate was also served to attendees.
The heated dome provided a lounge experience with couches, tables and promotional material. It didn’t completely drown out the music but you could also have audible conversations with your friends inside. Crowd control in it was on point. Surprisingly it never got too busy so and getting around in it was easy.
The whole festival included two stages. On day 1 the stage near the entrance accommodated all the techno talent while the main stage had all the electro and progressive house DJs. Day 2 was flipped around.
Friday evening had a lot of house energy. Mord Fustang played familiar electro bangers that had the crowd going crazy while things were a little low key in the techno area. Without a doubt the headliner, Moby stole the show. The voice sample from “Natural Blues” pierced the crowd as he mashed it up with other beats; the crowd was bouncing throughout his entire set. The conclusion of his performance however left the crowd in shock. Moby took off his shirt and stood up on the DJ booth, several members of the audience followed suit.
The second evening felt much calmer than the previous. Techno took over the main stage; the bass had everyone moving, the attendees enjoyed themselves. The second stage had a lot more activity on the second day of the festival. Danny Avilla and Deniz Koyu played some of their progressive flavours for the crowd. By the time Dubfire got behind the booth, everyone flocked to the main stage, a wonderful closure to the event.
The only problem with Brrrrr! was that there wasn’t much going on aside from the stages. Perhaps some more art displays would have added more to the experience. The fire pit was a great idea; more of those would have kept the crowd a little warmer. The ice sculpture at the entrance was a great touch, perhaps more of them with themes and a variance in shapes and sizes would have made a great addition to Brrrrr!
Overall Brrrrr! was a good experience and definitely something that makes Toronto a more vibrant city to the international electronic music world. Toronto loves to party; rain, shine, snow or wind and Brrrrr! proved this very well.

The Summer of EDM Festivals
0First of all, I know I’m a horrible blogger for barely posting anything in the past month. But what can I say? I was super busy from hearing all these crazy festivals hitting Toronto this summer! I hope my readers will be stopping by to this beautiful (and crazy) city to check out the numerous concerts that are brought to you by fellow music promoters.
Within just one month, four major new festivals were announced through social networks with some of the biggest international DJ’s and Producers headlining it. Toronto is used to having to accommodate weekly EDM events throughout the city, but having a two day, 12 hour festival featuring various genres of the EDM community? Never. That’s why I’m more excited than ever to be living in Toronto this summer to experience all four hometown shows, I hope all of you have the same opportunity as well.
To celebrate these announcements and welcoming, as well as promoting international to local DJ’s, I have compiled a list of mix tapes of DJ’s that will be hitting Toronto this summer. Because believe it or not, this summer will be all about the EDM Festivals.
Which one are you most excited for? Tweet at us through @_RoomNoise or Like us on Facebook.

May Concert Recap – Childish Gambino, Sleigh Bells, CSS and Death Cab For Cutie
0
Sorry for the lack of posts this week, I’ve just been swarmed with shows! But luckily for the readers here, I’ve recorded them all on video. I must say my favourite performance was probably Sleigh Bells, they definitely performed the best. I’m hoping to do more concert coverage this summer for all the Room-Noise readers. So far I’m taking the month of June off from shows to hopefully blog more and do some more research. Currently I’m in the process of getting a press pass for Osheaga, it would be amazing for me to be able to take my DSLR to record some of the performances for those who won’t be able to go this year! If you have the money and the chance to go to Osheaga, I highly suggest doing it. The line-up this year is quite insane. Death From Above 1979 is my number one reason at the moment. More info will come when the date comes closer, I might do a daily blog or a vlog of my journey to Montreal with my close friends. So for now, enjoy my review, comments and thoughts of the past three days.
CHILDISH GAMBINO:
My week began with Donald Glover/Childish Gambino at The Opera House, he started the night with a 25-30 minute set with his stand up comedy and a digital short featuring a member from LCD Soundsystem (don’t remember who because I was too short to see the screen). Afterwards he had his live band come up and Donald opened up his set with Freaks and Geeks. Let’s just say that I was really surprised at how well his live band performed, they had put so much energy into playing their part which sadly over powered Glover’s vocals. Otherwise, everyone at the show was clearly a die hard fan since I paid only $20 for my ticket, but there were people in the room who definitely paid more than $200. Overall, the show was a bit overhyped, he did a great show but it was, in lack of a better slang/word “aight”.
SLEIGH BELLS:
The next day, I missioned to The Sound Academy in the absolute crappy weather to see Princeton, Sleigh Bells and CSS. A great lineup (except for Princeton – sort of random) to be honest, I was actually really surprised that there was barely anyone when I arrived at the venue but by the time Sleigh Bells opened up with Iron Man by Ozzy, the crowd went insane. The band then appeared and the song slowly transitioned to Crown on the Ground. Their entire set was around 40-45 minutes long and I could tell the duo put in a lot of effort into their performance. My favourite part about the show was probably the lighting and the set behind them. Despite most of their music was probably air played over the speakers and not actually playing the music 100% live, it was the fans that really made it good.
CSS:
I probably waited for over 30 minutes for CSS to get on stage and it was definitely worth the wait. I’ve been a huge fan of this band, but I was actually really disappointed on their setlist and also Lovefoxxx’s vocals. I could barely hear her the entire time, nevertheless, she made it up with her crazy energy and her endless stripping! I also loved the fact that she wore a RATATAT t-shirt the entire time, really makes it work. This was probably my second favourite performance since I had the chance to see the band upfront and I could tell everyone in the band was having a great time, they were smiling non-stop and trying to get the crowd to dance. CSS will be returning to Toronto in October.
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE:
I had the chance to see Death Cab For Cutie with The Edge Intern Army. I spent four hours talking to the crowd who were lining up for the show, and let’s just say they were ALL die hard fans. DCFC hasn’t been in Toronto since 2008 I believe and tickets to this show were $50 at The Phoenix. There were fans who weren’t able to get tickets and they waited outside in the rain until the venue was nice enough to let them in. When I saw the band perform, my first thought was, what was Chris Walla playing? But also.. why was the drum set in the back corner of the stage? Those small set ups usually isn’t a concern to fans but it was just distracting for me. As for the set, the band played over 19 tracks and then an encore of 4 songs, ending with Transatlanticism. I will be seeing DCFC again in July in Osheaga, I can’t wait to compare the two shows in two completely different settings. I’m not a HUGE fan of the band, but I could tell that they were so grateful of their fans.

Mix-Tape Wednesdays: COACHELLA
0It’s official, as of 1:00 AM today, Coachella officially released the 2011 lineup. And I must say, I couldn’t sleep last night from all the excitement. The Sunday lineup just makes it so worth to travel all the way from Toronto, Canada to Indio, California for this three day event. So to celebrate this year’s Coachella, I made a mix-tape of my personal favourites. All of these artists will be performing this year, see you all in April!
