That’s what? DAS RACIST! (we don’t often post, but when we do it’s great!)

0

One thing is true about Das Racist: their music can’t be compared to anything in hip-hop today. What other group mentions Genghis Khan and Turtle from “Entourage” on the same song? And that’s not even talking about their album. On their two mixtapes “Sit Down, Man” and “Shut Up, Dude” Das Racist brought out hilarious jokes, obscure references, and an astute awareness of popular culture. But there isn’t really a need to classify the group into any genre either. After all, not many liberal arts school students become rappers.  The creativity and intelligence demonstrated on the mixtapes only continues to impress with the release of “Relax” (September 13). The first commercial attempt didn’t bastardize the material; just made it slightly toned down. In short, listen to the mixtapes, then listen to the album. Then play it to your friends, and in your car, and in your grandma’s kitchen.

Recomended tracks

Relax: Girl, Happy Rappy

Shut Up Dude: Shorty Said, Rainbow in The Dark, Nutmeg

Sit Down Man: Amazing, Fashion Party, Rapping To You

Lykke Leaks

Can you get enough of Lykke Li? I can’t. And judging by the second single off of the upcoming “Wounded Rhymes,” (set to see light on March 1st) Europe is still kicking American ass when it comes to meditative medleys sung by gorgeous girls. Florence and The Machine anybody? Keep your calendar open, because the release of the new album is followed by a North American tour kicking off on March 9th.  Here is the 2nd single from the album, called “I Follow Rivers”

The first single: Get Some – Lykke Li (B-Side included).

And just to prove to all you naysayers here’s a video of Lykke doing a live cover of none other than Ricky Ross.

And if you’ve been living under a rock, go and find her version of Kings of Leon’ “Knocked Up.”

Gather Round Children…

Missed me? Probably not. Here’s what I’ve been listening to in the last little while:

I’ve never been a huge fan of Lloyd Banks, but throw Kanye, Swizz Beats, and Fabolous on the track and I’ll listen on repeat. From Banks’ “Hunger For More 2” here is “Start It Up”

2011 is also supposed to be the year Lupe Fiasco will finally release his much anticipated “LASERS.” After much delay and arguments with his label over three disc venture LupE.N.D. which was supposed to come out way back in 2009, Lupe spent time recording music for Twilight, formed a collabo group called “All City Chess Club” including Asher Roth, B.o.B., The Cool Kids, Charles Hamilton, Blu, Diggy Simmons, Wale, J. Cole, & Dosage, and even a rock band called “Japanese Cartoon.” First notable effort from LASERS is “The Show Goes On” which samples Modest Mouse’ “Float On:”

If you haven’t heard “Black and Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa yet, don’t do it. Your friends will love you for not repeating the lines over and over. Here is an earlier track by Wiz titled “Ink My Whole Body”

Finally, two artists who you’ll hear more about this year. J.Cole has been generating much hype with some help from Jay-Z as well as features on Wale’s “Attention Deficit” and collabos with big names like No I.D. and Pharell. His latest mixtape “Friday Night Lights” can be found here.

Recommended tracks: “Blow Up”, “Higher”

This is also going to be the year Theophilus London will finally release a full length album. “Flying Overseas” is going to come out sometime in late 2011, but London already released the video for his first single, featuring Devonte Hynes and the other Knowles sister.

Disneylicious

Sorry for the long absence, those none of you that cared. Didn’t find any super inspirational music over the last couple of weeks, and still warming up to Cudi’s new album – we’ll see how that goes. I know I will get ragged on, but I hate Disney. Well maybe not hate but… All that fur, and animals playing people (as opposed to the other way around, i guess). Regardless, I’ve been humming this to myself for the better part of the day. Perhaps a young girl living with seven old men, isn’t as bad as it sound?

And to credit my colleague, Stephanie Wighton, this is plain awesome:

Mac Miller!

1

According to the Encyclopedia of White Rappers (yes it does actually exist: here) Mac Miller hails from Pittsburgh. That is about as much info as I cared to find, the rest of the time researching for this post was spent watching a bunch of videos that were veeerry nicely shot. Check him out: http://www.myspace.com/listentomac

Tuney… Wednesday???

1

The last time I watched BET, 50 Cent was trying to bet Kanye that his album will do better on opening day. What happened to that guy anyway? Something worth checking out for a change though, were this year’s cyphers, televised at the BET hip-hop awards. Last year’s, featuring the likes of Wale, Nicki Minaj, and Black Thought, were a good indication of who was up and coming, as well as bringing back some classics like Mos Def and Eminem. This year’s cyphers continued in the same way. And I’ll be fully biased and say the G.O.O.D. music one was the best. Though Rev Run and Ice Cube (anyone still take Ice seriously though?) killed theirs, apparently Kanye and Common were the only one who actually freestyled their parts, and Big Sean’s verse was just too smooth.

And here I promised myself I wouldn’t write about Kanye anymore…

Tuney Tuesdays: E-Dubble!

1

Move aside for a bit Good Fridays. Baltimore’s E-Dubble‘s been putting out freestyles over popular beats (RATATAT, Black Bells, Miike Snow, Tom Petty) for some time now. Not much to say, except go out and listen to them all. Here’s my favorite so far:

Sweet Swedes

1

It seems as if pretty girls singing in sweet voices, are fast becoming Sweden’s major export (Lykke Li anyone?). Joining an already impressive invasion into the indie scene are two sisters from a suburb of Stockholm. The duet of Johanna and Klara Söderberg gained an impressive audience with their YouTube cover of a Fleet Foxes’ Tiger Mountain Peasant Song. From there on First Aid Kit, as the girls named their duo, continued to gain popularity, enjoying frequent airplay on Swedish radio. The culmination of their work so far, is titled “The Big Black & The Blue”. To think that they are just 20 and 17! Their cover of Fever Ray’s “When I Grow Up” is just mind blowing!

Listen to it:

And since Lykke Li was mentioned, here is a video of her doing an awesome acoustic version of “Little Bit”:

Thanks for your continuous support and interest in Room Noise. Now go get that fifth serving of turkey, and mellow out to these tunes!
